Lloyd Williams (kennel co-owner and kennel manager) is the head dog trainer at
Bear Brook Kennels. Lloyd's career training dogs started in 1979 when he established the Maine State Police Canine Program. Among all the
German Shepherd Police dogs he has trained was the first "Akita" Police
Dog on the East Coast for the Portland Police Department. Lloyd is a national
certified police dog judge and narcotic detector dog judge for the United
States Police Canine Association.
After his
retirement from the State Police Canine Unit Lloyd became involved with
noted Veterinarian, Behaviorist and author Dr. Ian Dunbar and created
puppy socialization classes focusing on positive reinforcement. This process developed
into a positive way of training dogs with rewards. Lloyd continues his
education through training seminars and conferences. He recently attended a seminar at Cornell
University in Ithaca, NY for canine behavior problems
and attends annual APDT Association conferences. With his background
and expertise Lloyd is able to bring even the rowdiest and aggressive dog under control and plus teach him manners. He can also bring a timid, sensitive dog out of
the corner and into the mainstream of life. Lloyd conducts the only apprentice
trainer program in the state. For over 18 years he has turned students into
dog trainers who have become respected in their own right.
Lloyd is a
Certified Pet Dog Trainer, through the Certification Council for Pet Dog
Trainers.
Lloyd's goal
for training is to get the dog to work for the handler because the dog
wants to, not because he has to.
